On May 18, 1967, at the Second National Convention of the Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists (PSA) held in Manila, the PSA Constitution was amended to allow the creation of an independent body that would certify specialists in the art and science of Anesthesiology. This specialist would be known as a "Fellow" of the Philippine Board of Anesthesiology (PBA).

The mission of the PBA is to improve the quality of anesthesia healthcare in the Philippines by ensuring and improving the quality of graduate medical education for physicians in anesthesiology training.
